Chilton's Jeep Wagoneer/Comanche/Cherokee 1984-1991 Repair Manual
Published in Paperback by Chilton/Haynes (November, 1991)
Average review score:

Really bad book.I bought this manual for my Grand Cherokee. I am extremely dissatisfied with it. What do you think you can expect from a book that covers 10 years worth of 3 different model vehicles? I have an earlier book for my regular Cherokee, and it has over 50 pages of electrical information! I can find out any wire, any connection, anywhere!! This book here - NO WAY! It gives me 2 small 5"x5" diagrams for the ENTIRE vehicle!!! Unless you are driving a vehicle that is one third Cherokee, one third Wagoneer, one third Grand, you are basically wasting your time...Stay away from this one...
Great Repairs! My husband found this to be very useful in trouble shooting for our 1988 Jeep. Save $$$$$ and do it yourself with confidence.
jeep stallsMy 94 jeep cherokee stalls whenever it wants I changed fuel filter, spark plug wires, discribter cap, coil what else?? Thank you Raymond Wooden

Haynes Repair Manual (Jeep Grand Cherokee 1993-2000)
Published in Paperback by Haynes Publishing (2000)

How much can you fit into a book this size?If you already know enough to do most of the work on a car or truck where you can reach most of the parts (like maybe you've rebuilt an engine or two, replaced a clutch, put new shoes on drum brakes) then this book will probably provide the information you need to do work on the parts of the Grand Cherokee that you can reach. If you have a good pheumatic ratchet wrench and the time, you can probably do the balance of the mechanical work yourself. This book will not tell you what to do when your coil burns out repeatedly or help you diagnose that your injector pump impeller lunched itself and spit little pieces throughout your entire injection system. Chrysler/Mopar will charge you more than you can imagine to fix those two, and a good - very good - local mechanic will still charge a lot. This is not a book for beginners, but engines built since about 1980 are not for beginners. For me this book rates 4 stars, but for the general market, I'm going with three.
More pictures would be niceI am very happy with this book but it has two major problems.
1) Not so many quality pictures, could be more ilustrated.
2) Doesn't cover so well all some areas (ex: interior and brakes) while extensively cover areas like engine overhaul.
I'd recommend if you are interested in doing some mechanical repairs by your own.

Haynes Jeep Manuals are the BestIf you want to get an upgrade or a problem fixed quick and easy, Haynes Jeep Manuals are by far the best. Trying to buy the original manuals from the Chrysler official website can set you back $70 instead of a great value for [price]

The Last Cherokee Warriors
Published in Hardcover by Pelican Pub Co (June, 1978)
Average review score:

A sad corruption of historyPoorly researched, poorly writen, this could have been a great book. It deals with two interesting and misrepresented characters, but in a way that sheds no new information or insight into the men or the time they lived in. A great many factual errors in the book.
Very InformativeI'm so glad I ran across this book about Christie and Procter. This is fascinating Cherokee history. I recommend it!
Engrossing DocumentaryPhillip W. Steele's engaging volume documents the lives and struggles of Ned Christie and Ezekiel Proctor, who fought to preserve their Indian heritage and culture against the wave of white men and the power of the United States government.
Steele's powerfully written documentary of this turbulent era in America's history reveals the factual, specific, and somewhat obscure details of the lives of Proctor and Christie and their eventual demise. Steele has written difinitively and interestingly, weaving the facts with the emotional impact that only truth can evoke. "The Last Cherokee Warriors" is a book you will not want to put down!

This book does NOT cover the full sized 84-on wagoneers!Does not cover the full sized wagoneers that were produced the same years as some of the tiny little wanabe jeeps. I have an '84 full sized Wagoneer.
Can get the book at an auto part store cheaper. It helped me to install a air/idle control valve on a 1987 Dodge Caravan. I did not even know where to find it.

Mandie and the Dangerous Imposters (Mandie Book #23)
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (June, 1994)
Average review score:

Oh so Boring!Mandie is finally home from Europe, and she's paying a quick visit to her Cherokee relatives. But it turns out to be more than a leisurely visit. Her cousin Tisani has disappeared, and strange men are digging on a hillside owned by the Cherokee's.
What are they digging for? Will Tisani ever turn up? Find out in this book by Lois Gladys Leppard.

I didn't quite get this book. I nearly fell asleep over it; it was so slow going. Oh, it has plenty of suspense but still! The plot seemed pretty unrealistic. I think the author was running out of ideas.
Another wonderful book by Lois Gladys LeppardMandie's with her Indian friends and Kin! :-) This book is wonderful! Mandie and the Medicine Man is another Good book with 5 Stars by Lois Gladys Leppard. But then again all the Mandie books are good.

The Night Has a Naked Soul: Witchcraft and Sorcery Among the Western Cherokee
Published in Hardcover by Syracuse Univ Pr (Trade) (November, 1997)
Average review score:

Read John and Anna Kilpatrick InsteadAlan Proctor is the son of the two very wonderful scholars: John and Anna Kilpatrick. In this book, he took their unpublished notes and add his own commentary. They obviously left this information unpublished because of the volatile nature of the subject. In his comments about Cherokee people and even his own relatives, Alan is both patronizing and insulting. He writes from an Anglo anthropological perspective that is out of touch with the Cherokee community. There are so many other books on Cherokee culture that are far superior to this book.
A very interesting look into Cherokee beliefsEven though this book was a requred text I was really surprised to see that Native Americans have beliefs in witchcraft. The book is really worth the purchasing and was really worth my time. Kilpartick made a hard subject simple and easy to understand.
The Night Has A Naked SoulCherokee mysticism was seldom whispered about in the outside world until James Mooney began his scholarly research in 1891. And there had been no comprehensive study of Cherokee supernaturalism since until Alan Kirkpatrick undertook this study. This is an excellent source book which examines in depth the Cherokee sacred formulas, the idi:gawé:sdi, which have been largely hidden and almost forgotten by this generation. Kirkpatrick discusses shamanic text which serves to cloak the spells in a "secret language whose meanings can only be deciphered by those who have the key and thus are initiated into the code." Some of the spells discussed include those for divining, for poultice making, to counteract evil thinkers, to forget the dead and to trap night walkers. I must add that these spells are considered "ritually dead" and can only be revived by observing certain well-guarded ceremonial purification rites. This is not a story book with a well constructed plot and a breath-taking ending. Rather it is an "instruction manual" geared to those on the Medicine Path who need help understanding the Way.

Grandmother Spider Brings the Sun: A Cherokee Story
Published in Paperback by Rising Moon (June, 1997)
Average review score:

But it is NOT CherokeeThis could have been a good book except for the fact that the author claimed it is Cherokee. Cherokee stories do not have coyote as a character. The author should perhaps stick to Navajo stories from her own heritage, or relate stories from other cultures more accurately.
Wonderful to Read AloudThis marvelous story of how tiny and ancient Grandmothe Spider successfully brings the sun, something larger and more spritely animals before her could not accomplish, was written to be read aloud. Instead of the usual stereotypical "ancient legend storyelling" literary style we often see with retelling of traditional tales, this legend is refreshingly written in a colloquial manner. This style, as well as the two-page layout with text on one side, makes this an excellent book to read aloud. The textures and colors and expressive animal illustrations can be shown to their best advantage. My boys love all the animal pictures, the humor, and the exciting fire-spouting Sun Guard monsters! We return again and again to see and hear the sweet-faced but proud and determined Grandma Spider as she demonstrates why she is so respected and revered.
Grandmother Spider Brings the SunThis is a wonderful telling of a truly Cherokee tale. Most stories written after the oral tradition can be a litte stale. Keams avoids this by modernizing the language for her younger readers. The Coyote, btw, comes from the Western Cherokee, after the removal. I was told this story as a child by my Western Cherokee Grandfather with the Coyote, and by my Eastern Tribes Grandmother without it. It would be correct either way. All in all, a wonderful retelling.

PA-28 Cherokee (A Pilot's Guide)

A sad excuse for a POHThis would be an alright book for a person who's never seen the plane to get familiar with it, but that's about it. There is no tech info, no performance data. It attempts to cover about 30 years of piper cherokee/warrior performance and updates while being as vague as possible. Its sold at many FBO's as a replacement for the POH-sad, because it lacks any of the tech info that you'll need to complete even a short VFR flight plan. If you want a couple nice pictures, and a description of how to do a preflight of a generic "cherokee" this is your book. If you are looking for a personal POH, keep looking.
A GOOD POH SUPPLEMENT WITH SOME OVERLAPThis booklet covers mainly the fixed gear powered by the 150 and 180 HP engines with most of the info relevant to the other Cherokees. It includes loading and performance charts as the original POH does, but expands on information not found there. I wish the original POH for this aircraft was as informative as this book. Just the existance of this type booklet by ASA is telling as to what is lacking in the Cherokee POH. The book states it is not a replacement for the original handbook. I feel it is good supplement.

Cherokee Americans: The Eastern Band of Cherokees in the Twentieth Century
Published in Paperback by Brompton Books Corp (February, 1993)
Average review score:

A solid, well-balanced history of the Eastern CherokeeHistories of 20th century Indian communities are rare. Americans still tend to think of Indian communities as living in the past. John Finger gives us a sympathetic and engaging history of the Eastern Cherokee tribe in since 1900. The Eastern Band of Cherokee managed to evade the Cherokee Trail of Tears and remained in their mountain homeland. Not as well known as the Western Cherokee, the smaller eastern tribe has a reservation bordering the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Western North Carolina. The Eastern Cherokee were benignly neglected by the Bureau of Indian Affairs for many years. Finger shows us how tribal leaders took advantage of this neglect to carve out self-determination for their tribe long before the concept became the guiding light of modern federal Indian policy. The book is useful for any student of 20th century tribal life. It also works well in college classes in Indian history or ethnohistory.

Cherokee Vision of Eloh': Text in Cherokee and English
Published in Hardcover by Indian Univ Pr (December, 1981)
Average review score:

A mythology/history of the Cherokee people. This is an interesting, and unsual, look into the Cherokee beliefs. Written by Cherokee scholars, this book has insight that is not to be found in other texts of similar subject. Dr. Meredith is a well respected author and member of the Native American community. The authors do not treat the subject matter in a cold, sterile manner, but as people who have grown up hearing these things and continue to live among them. The authors have since brought out a new version of this book, updated with illustrations.
